Message from ISRRT
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to inform you that Philips and the ISRRT have gone live with the “DoseWise Radiographer of the Year 2016” contest. It is only open to radiographers who are members of ISRRT member societies or Associate Members..  The link is shown below. This contest is aimed at raising the awareness of radiographers to the need to be aware of dose when examining or treating patients and will help to promote this very important area.

There will be a video and much further publicity on Twitter and LinkedIn materials and the ISRRT, in conjunction with Philips, will be using Social Media. A link will also be on www.isrrt.org .

I would appreciate it if you could promote this contest amongst your members as widely as possible in order to ensure success.

Please publish the following link:

There’s still time to bethe ISRRT DoseWise Radiographer/Radiological Technologist of the Year

This year’s contest is well underway. But you haven’t missed the boat yet. Tell us how you manage X-ray dose at your institution and you have a chance to rise above the crowd. One thought leader will be selected to receive airfare and entry to RSNA 2015 from ISRRT and will be invited to present their case to the Radiology Advisory board, hosted by Philips.

Get the details ›

It’s easy! There’s really no downside when you consider it’s an opportunity to:

  • Show off your dose management skills (a little self-promotion never hurts)
  • Stimulate the sharing of best practices among your peers
  • Attend a major conference with your peers
20 cases have already been submitted, so don’t hesitate.

Enter Now

Submissions will be accepted through September 30, 2015. Don’t miss out!

CAMRT Advocacy on Isotope Supply

The issue in brief :

With the planned shutdown of the NRU reactor at Chalk River scheduled for 2016, there has been increased concern and media attention to the potential for isotope shortages in the short and medium term. As Technetium-99m (99mTc) is used in over 80% of nuclear medicine procedures - more than 30 - 40 million examinations worldwide yearly- this product is clearly crucial to the practice of nuclear medicine. Ongoing reliable supply of this critical isotope is under threat. According to a recent OECD report1, "Current global irradiation and processing capacity is predicted to be insufficient over the period analysed for reliable 99Mo/99mTc supply, even with all producers operating under normal conditions…"

Messages from ISRRT

Dear Colleagues,
For information.
New Team-working Document, published jointly by the UK Society and College of Radiographers and the Royal College of Radiologists.
The link is: http://www.sor.org/learning/document-library/team-working-clinical-imaging

1. The Bulletin of the World Health Organization Vol 90, Number 8, August 2012, page 560 http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/90/8/12-010812/en/index.html  reported the Top 10 Health Technology Hazards  as ranked by the Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI Institute). Alarm hazards including alarm fatigue – health-care workers becoming overwhelmed by the sheer number of alarms on medical devices – is top of the list.

Medical use of ionizing radiation is included in 3 of the 10 technologies considered:
  • Digital breast tomosynthesis   (“is leapfrogging from film to 3-D breast tomosynthesis the right decision?”)
  • New CT radiation reduction technologies (“Are you doing enough to slice the dose and the risk?)
  • Proton beam radiation therapy (“Should it be part of your strategic plan or will carbon ions supplant protons?”)

Non-ionizing radiation exposure is involved in one of the 10 health technologies considered in the Top Ten (Ultrahigh-field-strength MRI systems).

For your information, in 2011 radiation overdose in radiotherapy was categorized by ECRI Institute as number 1 among the Top 10 Health Technology Hazards.

If you wish to look at the full report “ECRI Institute's Top 10 C-Suite Watch List: Hospital Technology Issues for 2012”, it can be downloaded by clicking on the registration hyperlink  https://www.ecri.org/Forms/Pages/2012_C-Suite_Watch_List.aspx  and filling up a simple form.
2. Please find below the latest RPOP information from the IAEA website.

It is excellent to note that the ISRRT has been listed, alongside important international organisations, as one of those who have taken part in the production of the “Joint Position Statement on the IAEA Patient Radiation Exposure Tracking”.

The ISRRT have continued to work on an international level with the IAEA and thanks to the work done by the Board and the Regional Officers this work is recognised and appreciated by the IAEA.

Regards

Sandy
