Superintendent Radiographer(Therapy) Mahargama has sent a letter to Secretary GRTA
A letter from Superintendent Radiographer(Therapy) Maharagama Cancer Hospital
Dept: of Radiotherapy,
National cancer Institute,
Maharagama.
17.08.2011
Hon General Secretary,
Government Radiological Technologists Association (GRTA),
Dear Sir,
B.Sc. Radiotherapy Degree Programme conducted by Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS) of University of Peradeniya.
Senior Consultant Oncologist and I (Superintendent Radiographer) are the Programme Coordinators for the above degree programme in the National Cancer Institute, Maharagama and we underwent all the difficulties to train 1st batch of Therapy Undergraduates (5 in numbers) and hopefully they would be passing out from the University as B.Sc graduate Therapy Radiographers in the near future. I am absolutely happy that I was involved in the programme and this occasion would be a stepping stone in the profession of “Radiation Therapy Technology” in Sri Lanka. My fervent hope is that this programme should be continued without disruption here in the National cancer Institute, Maharagama as this Institution is in far with any Radiation Therapy Centre in Europe.
Unfortunately currently only 5 undergraduates (from 2006/07 batch) are undergoing Training in the Institute and we did not get students from 2007/08 and 2008/09 university entrants due to reasons known only to FAHS, but I am happy to mention that undergraduates are taken for training in the “Radiography Field” from the above entrants.
I guess that one or two under hands are working behind close doors to stop “Training of Radiotherapy Undergraduates’ and they need this training to be discontinued and the B.Sc Radiography training to go on. This is highly an injustice caused to Therapy Radiographer community and to “Therapy Radiographer Profession” in general in Sri Lanka. As all the ex- co members are aware that these two fields are fast developing, have its own destiny and are equivalent in contents. Here in Sri Lanka, from the start of School of Radiography in the latter part 1930 s, These fields both Radiography and Radiotherapy have been developed simultaneously and independently to the present state and is having equal status by now.
I can foresee that in future, B.Sc Radiotherapy Degree programme is the only programme that would be involving with training of Therapy Radiographers in Sri Lanka and if the FAHS doesn’t take undergraduates for this programme, there would be dearth of qualified Therapy Radiographers in Sri Lanka, which would hamper manpower in expanding radiation therapy services in the future.
Having understood this situation, The GRTA which caters for both Diagnostic and Therapy Radiographers professional, social and academic requirements, should interfere with relevant authorities such as FAHS, Ministry of Health and University Grants Commission etc to have continuity of B.Sc Radiotherapy Degree programme in Sri Lanka. Every Radiographer especially the Therapy Radiographers in Sri Lanka have to pay attention and interest to see this programme is regularly conducted along with the B.Sc Radiography degree programme.
During my tenure of office, I significantly contributed to uplift the standard of radiation therapy delivery and raise the standard of training of Therapy Radiographers (both Diplomats and Undergraduates) in Sri Lanka. My tenure of office is ending in November 2011.The Incoming Superintendent Radiographer will have to maintain the standards, we achieved in so far and it is further developed.
Thanking You,
Yours truly,
H.K.A. Dharmasiri

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRST SECRETARY………………
It is my pleasure and privilege to issue a message to be published in the website of the “ Society of Radiological Technologists Sri Lanka on 27th February 2010. “The Society of Radiographers” was founded in 1975 by a band of dedicated Radiographers who had very well meant and healthy idea of giving the Radiographers a further education after their qualification in the School of Radiography.
It was a fund of knowledge imparted to Radiographers by the Society of Radiographers by its educational activities like lectures and seminars conducted by invited prominent lecturers during the last 35 years. It is the sacred duty of all the present members of the Society of Radiological Technologists to be actively interested in the various programs of the Society to explore the vast field of modern developments in Radiography.
I wish the Society of Radiological Technologists spectacular success in all its activities in the future.

A Message to the Society of Radiological Technologists, Sri Lanka………..
Being a founder member of the Society of Radiological Technologists, Sri Lanka which was established in 1975, I am delighted to send this message to the Society on the occasion of the launching of a website for the Society.
It is hoped that this website will not only meet the needs of Sri Lankan Radiological Technologists at home and abroad to share and exchange their knowledge and experiences in the field of medical imaging.,but will also provide up to date information on technological advances in our field. Medical Imaging is developing and expanding at a constant pace, it is therefore imperative that we keep abreast of new techniques and technologies so as to provide the best service for our patients and promote job satisfaction for technologists through the enhancement of competence and skills.
Technology alone cannot replace the personal skills of the technologist in ‘providing good quality imaging and treatment to patients’ which is our ultimate goal.
My best wishes for success to the Society of Radiological Technologists in the launching and ongoing development of the website and in all future endeavours
I M Premaratne
Former Tutor, School of Radiograhpy, Sri Lanka & P.G.I.M
Supdt. Radiographer, Asiri Hospital

Message from the first President of the “Society of Radiographers Sri Lanka”
The launching of the Society website ,I am sure will be of immense help to all our members in improving their IT skills and they will be able to download all the new advances in Radiography and new developments in technology for the benefit of our Members.
They will also be able to easily update and upgrade when required, all software that are been used in Sri Lanka hospitals.
This will help them to give a better service to all patients in Sri Lanka, which I am sure is the ultimate goal of all radiographers
Thanking You,

Message from Mr. Sunil Balasooriya, Former Secretary SRTSL
It is with great pleasure to send this message for the official opening of the society web site:www.srtsl.net. being a former secretary.
It is an interesting development within a Radiography Informatics which may have a significant impact on education and training in Radiography/Radiotherapy in near future. This is the best way to explore the role of e-learning, challenging with the face to face traditional teaching. I hope this web site will be a good resource of current and future advances in Radiography/Radiotherapy might best be incorporated into update knowledge and skills .
I wish this would be a fruitful one, if all Sri Lankan members of Society have positive attitudes.
I am very happy for your achievement.
Congratulations!!!
