Nuclear Medicine Online Programme
Message from Mr. Sunil balasooriya, Former Secretary SRTSL.
Nuclear Medicine on-line course for Radiographers
Just to let you know that I am not working now and decided to conduct an on-line NM course as I can fully devote to the course and share my knowledge, skill, and clinical experience in the field of nuclear medicine for 20 years in Sri Lanka and 11 years in the UK.
Advance your career in medical imaging with an instructor-led nuclear medicine online course. The objective is to demonstrate understanding of basic science underlying practical Nuclear Medicine and the principles used in the performance of clinical Nuclear Medicine studies and competence in undertaking a full range of Nuclear Medicine procedures.
The course consists of basic sciences and basic clinical nuclear medicine procedures.
The complete course is supplied on-line for self-study. Complementary lectures / tutorials, in-service practical exercises and clinical experience will also include in this course.
The final assessment includes on-line assignments and exam, practical skills assessment, completion of workbook and proof of evidence of clinical experience.
Individual students can register for the instructor-led course provided they have access to suitable equipment in a nuclear medicine department. To join the course, all participants (students, supervisors) should register in the training academy.
If anyone is interested, drop me an email to get relevant application form/s.
NB: Please convey this message to your batchmates and others who are interested because I have only limited email addresses of my students from 1999 to 2008.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Sunil Balasooriya

"PATIENT" - A patient's perspective
I am yourPATIENT
My P is for,
· I am a person, a human being and need treating as such.
· Be patient with me, I may be frightened or confused.
· Please be aware and don’t assume I have the same knowledge or understanding as you.
· Please don’t presume that you can call me by my first name, ask me first.
· Please don’t presume I am well just because I look well.
· Help me prioritise my care, as I do normally everyday, a small thing can mean so much to me.
· Be professional- act and look like a professional.
· Powerless – remember I may be feeling powerless within a strange environment.
· Be personable, a smile can be so reassuring.
My A is for,
· Awareness – please don’t talk over me or about your weekend to your colleague unless you involve me.
· Please try not to bring your worries or hangover to work it is always obvious and lessens my confidence in you.
My T is for,
· Think before you speak or act, it is hard to take a loose word or action back.
· Try and think how you would feel in my situation.
· Try and gain my trust.
· Treat me with dignity please.
My I is for Importance,
· I am the most important person to you, I am your patient, but never forget you are just as important to me as you are my carer.
· Use your imagination to help solve my perceived or actual problems.
· But most of all keep me informed about my care.
My Eis for Explanation,
· Explain to me who you are, what you are doing and why.
· Try to make my burden easier.
My N is for Nurture,
· Try and nurture me I am probably scared.
· Keep me safe and secure.
· Think it is not what I say, It is sometimes what I don’t say, find out what it is and how you help me.
· But most of all listen to me.
My T is for Trust,
· Gain my trust.
· But most of all please treat me like your most cherished family member or friend.

Introducing Our Senior most living Radiographer
Mr. A.D.S. Wijesinghe is 90 yrs now. Born on 10th Sep 1922
He has Joined the Radiography training on 15th March 1944. First appointment as a radiographer on 15.03.1946.
He has specialized as a radiographer both in Diagnostic & Therapy.
He became the superintendent Radiographer of the General Hospital colombo on 2nd May 1973. Retired on 10th Sept. 1978 as Superintendent Radiographer (then general Hospital Colombo) National Hospital of Sri Lanka.
He says, " when we joined the radiography department the designation was "X-ray Technician". Later it was changed to "Radiographer" when the designation was changed in the UK. I passed the M.S.R London examination in Radiotherapy in 1958. It was necessary to undergo training in Radiotherapy, before promotion to grade I at the 12th year.
So we were compelled to do radiotherapy and at the same time to pass MSR in Radiotherapy.
When I reverted back to diagnostic department I was compelled to pass MSR Radiography (diagnostic). Now I am the most senior Radiographer in the diagnostic side in retirement."... " Those days there were no ECG technicians. We had to do the ECGs and we were paid an additional payment for that..." ...The x-ray machines were not shock proofed. The high tension cables did not have insulation. We had three x-ray machines operated with one high tension generator.. There was a warning sign board at the entrance 'Danger 50,000 Volts".
" Radiography was a highly recognized job. We were respected every where by every one. Our salaries were comparatively higher than that of most other government employees' ."
He is very kind hearted and soft spoken person. He has helped the junior radiographers in their difficulties and helped them to develop their educational standards during his tenure as the superintendent radiographer.
We wish him healthy life!
He Lives in "Somi Sevana, Weragama Road, Mahawadduwa, Wadduwa. Tel. 0384921394
